2019 Aston Martin DBS Superleggera Review

What a beauty!

It seems that Aston Martin have certainly done it again. Power, class, finesse and plush creature comforts to boot.

If you’re into a V12 super sports vehicle, this could be your ride. Read on below…

Any mention of the name Aston Martin and talk inevitably turns to Sean Connery and vodka martinis, shaken not stirred!

Such is the strong association between the iconic automotive brand and James Bond in Fleming’s Fictional Spy.

My own spying adventures ended years ago after that counselling session with HR and my poison of choice is red cordial of course.

Hey, does anyone have a hanger for this?

The Aston Martin DBS Superlaggera is not an ideal car for a super spy. It’s pretty conspicuous for a start. Powered by a twin turbo charged V12, the Superlaggera has a distinctive growl and an F1 style rasp from the starter mode.

But if you want to go undercover, the silent electric Hyundai Kona EV is the better option. All the Aston’s V12 power is invaluable of course throughout running smirsh or spectre. Driving anything slower, any vehicle that takes longer than 3.4 seconds to reach 100 kilometres per hour for example.

Even in the dry the engine output challenges the massive Pirelli P0 tyres and the cars traction control. The engine drives through an eight speed ZF automatic. Initially the transmission feels uncoordinated and mismatched to the engine but drivers will soon adjust to it.

The ZF auto is actually more competent than Lamborghini’s single clutch automated box in the Aventador S. Wind up some revs and switch manually and the Superlaggera’s automatic redeems itself. To say the DVS Superlaggera is a dynamically compelling package is to understate the case.

For breaking and cornering its a wholesale improvement on the DB11, and the ride comfort is nicely compliant in the car’s GT mode.

The Superlaggera features controls sourced from Mercedes Benz, although without the same orderly placement. See the adjustment switchgear on the centre console, for example, rather than on the door card.

But cabin comfort is excellent, the seats are very well contoured and the Superlaggera delivers a fabulous blend of style and fragrance from its quilted leather.

As the icing on the cake this is one high performance GT car that is easy to enter or leave for those who are past their prime.

So it’s a very functional package for spies making the transition to the time.
