2019 Audi Q8 55 TFSI Review

With SUVs making up a huge marketshare in Australia, this could be the SUV that breaks the mould? Oozing style, pizzaz and creature comforts all ’round, the Audi Q8 55 TFSI certainly stands out.

But… will the lack of features you would expect as standard on a pricey, up-market vehicle do it damage?

Here’s what CarSales had to say in their review.

The Audi Q8 luxury SUV is big, bold, and bristling with technology that is tailor-made for the urban jungle. Even though it’s got four doors, not two, it’s touted as an SUV coupe. And I reckon it looks pretty schmick. As the brand’s first ever coupe-like SUV, this heavy-set machine features a bold new look octagonal front grill, bookended by slim, stylised headlights.

The Q8’s flanks feature pumped wheel arches. And at the back of the car is a futuristic full-width rear LED brake light bar. Just look at that. It’s LED sculpture. There’s no denying this is a striking design. And although the car is slightly shorter than the Q7, with which it shares its platform, it’s significantly wider. This translates to more space for occupants. And I got to say, Audi has done a top job with the interior design.

The cabin is dominated by a trio of LCD screens, starting with the obligatory virtual cockpit. Crisp, clear, and intuitive. But it’s the centre console that really attracts the eye. The screens are so sharp; better than a top-spec iPad. And the way they are integrated into the dashboard is a work of art.

The screens feature haptic and acoustic feedback, too. So, every time you successfully hit a button or toggle a new menu, you get a little pulse from the screen. It’s very cool. Chuck in a Nordic-themed gear shifter, concealed wireless phone charging, and supple leather seats, and the cabin blends aesthetic splendour with minimalist design. But I got to say, the lack of massaging seats is an insult.

You’ve got to pay an extra $1,000 for that. Power-assisted door closure: $1,500. Electric steering column adjust: $900. I mean, this is a $130,000 flagship luxury SUV. Everything should be included, in my opinion.

Backseat room is pretty good, and there are some nice comfort features here. The boot isn’t as big as the Q7’s, but it’s still pretty useable, and you can fold down the rear seats to open up more room. There’s a lot to like about the way this car drives. The steering, it’s direct.

The V6 engine is refined but really potent. And best of all, it’s got all-wheel drive to give you that confidence when it’s raining outside. Although the adaptive coil spring suspension is not the most compliant in its class, erring more on the sporty side of things, the car does a pretty good job of cushioning occupants from most bumps and lumps in the road.

There are loads of effective autonomous driving aids, and the car even has a 48V mild-hybrid electrical system. This will switch off the engine when coasting to save fuel, but even with this function, she is a thirsty mistress. This big, heavy, handsome machine is one of the best-looking SUVs inside and out.

The Q8 is a delight to drive and easy to operate. It’s a high-tech luxury cocoon that effortlessly blocks out the madness of modern motoring.

Okay, so it might be exceedingly expensive and it’s missing some key options, but overall, I really enjoyed driving this car.
