2019 Peugeot 308 GT Review

What a great sports hatch!

Clearly Peugeot had a very specific niche market in mind when designing this beauty, and yes, perhaps they could have added some bells and whistles, but if Peugeot fans have anything to say, they’ll be thrilled to be paying less for more!

Here’s what CarSales had to say in their review of the Peugeot 308 GT.

When car companies introduce limited edition sports models they’re often offering more performance for more dollars.

But not in the case of the Peugeot 308 GT. Only 140 examples of the GT are coming to Australia… with less power at a lower price than the famous 308 GTi hot hatch it is related to.

It’s an intriguing way to go about it and not necessarily a bad way either, because the GT is a fun little jigger to drive.

A detuned version of the GTi 1.6-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder drops 35 kilowatts and 45 Newton-metres in the GT, but it’s still enthusiastic. This engine offers an Aussie first as it’s fitted with a petrol particulate filter to reduce pollution emissions. It’s already common technology here for diesel engines.

And the GT’s price? Well that’s down $6000 to a starting point just under $40,000 before on-road costs. While that is pretty appealing, it is pitched directly up against one of the great hot hatch bargains of modern times, the Hyundai i30 N.

And as fun as the Pug is to drive on a twisty road with it’s sports suspension, accurate steering and decent brakes, it’s not in the Hyundai’s league.

But what the 308 GT has going for it against plenty of hotter hatches is this, an automatic transmission. While they are mostly manuals. The new Aisin eight-speed in the 308 GT makes life a hell of a lot easier if you are going to try and live with this car every day.

Mind you, living with the GT is for couples not families.

Those big sports seats up-front help squeeze rear-seat passengers even further. And then you’ve got to deal with Peugeot’s infuriating i-cockpit, where your view of the instrument panel is blocked unless you dump the steering wheel into your lap.

Some people love it, some of us just don’t.

Then there’s the lack of proper cup and bottle holders, which is annoying, and the lack of buttons so you have to adjust most things through the touch screen, which is less annoying.

The 308 GT is not mild and its not wild, it’s not expensive and it’s not cheap, it’s not the best car in the category and it’s far from the worst.

It’s limited in numbers but not in the way it behaves. In this case less is a good thing.
