2019 Toyota Corolla SX Review

Bigger, heavier, more powerful, eye catching lines, but what’s that…? Less interior space?

Like the review suggests, however, Toyota does know what they’re doing. And they’ve been “doing it” for a very long time.

By now, we all know that Toyota did something a little bit strange when designing its all-new Corolla. Though the designers did make it bigger, heavier, safer and cleaner, they also shrunk the boot and rear seat space by almost 40 per cent.

That’s not what you’d expect for a small car that’s been top of its game for 53 years. But that’s the facts.
And one can only assume Toyota knows what they’re doing.

On the plus side, there’s a new two-litre engine that’s more powerful and more efficient than the unit it replaces.

A ten-step continuously variable transmission helps progress immensely, and where ride and handling are concerned, the Corolla’s a winner.

Safety technology now includes autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control and pedestrian and cyclist avoidance technology, There’s also lane keeping assistance to help keep you on the straight and narrow. You could legitimately say the Corolla’s safety technology is state of the art – right up there with the big-name Europeans. But that doesn’t detract from the issue of space.

Sure, the cabin is well-presented and the front seats are comfy with wonderful support. There’s also plenty of soft-touch materials and equipment like push-button ignition, wireless phone charging and an electric park brake to round out the deal.

Oh, and we love the longer five-year warranty and capped-price servicing plan, the list price making the Corolla SX a very competitive small hatch indeed.

If Toyota could just address the fact that the new model falls short on back seat and boot space we reckon this generation Corolla could be the best yet.

But with other small hatches matching the Corolla in every other way – and offering more space to boot – we think the latest model has limits to its appeal.
