2020 Holden Colorado Review

Its priced up there with the Ford Ranger and the Toyota Hilux, but is it up to the same standard?

Let’s see what CarSales had to say in their review has to say about the Holden Colorado.

The Holden Colorado is a good thing, but in terms of sales, it lags behind the likes of HiLux, Ranger and Triton. But Holden believes that the Colorado belongs in the top three, and to prove it, has brought us to some gnarly tracks here in the Thai jungle, not far from where the Colorado is actually built.

First arriving in 2012, the Colorado is one of the oldest utes in the category, but Holden gave it a substantial refresh for Model Year 17, with a new front end styling, improved infotainment and safety equipment and changes under the skin to ramp up refinement and performance.

For the just-released model-year 2020, the Colorado’s changes are relatively minor — it’s really just down to a slight re-jig of the range and some additional standard features. In the case of the LTZ we drove, it now gets leather seats – heated at the front – and a spray on tub liner.

The Holden’s inside story is pretty convincing with comfortable seats and ample room front and rear and it doesn’t go too badly on standard feature either, such as an eight-inch colour touch screen, embedded satnav and voice commands, remote engine start, tyre pressure monitoring and front and rear park assist.

While it has forward collision alert, there is no autonomous emergency braking available on any Colorado. Driving along the secondary roads and jungle tracks in Thailand’s north served as a reminder that the Colorado’s 2.8-litre engine has a fairly narrow torque band, with the transmission needing to regularly down-shift to keep up momentum.

The engine could really do with a touch more refinement too. We also the got an opportunity to drive the local Thai market Chevrolet Colorado with it’s 2.5-litre Duromax engine, which was much smoother and wasn’t lacking for performance either.

It’s just a shame this engine only meets euro 4 emissions requirements, and so won’t be a likely starter in the Aussie market. It all comes together pretty well for the Colorado when off-road — the steep rutted hill climb we negotiated in the Thai jungle was dispatched without raising a sweat.

The Colorado is starting to show its age, with no AEB available and so-so engine refinement. However it is a comfortable, well-equipped ute, that has good dynamics, it’s good off-road and makes an excellent towing proposition.
